A co-worker asked me to help with her laptop which has gone on the fritz. (hangs on bootup)

I'll spare you the troubleshooting done so far but it appears the memory might be bad/going bad. Running memtest v3.2 always produces fails on test#4,6,7 while running v3.1 sometimes has fails on test#4.

This particular presario model has 128mb onboard (non-removable) and 1 expansion slot with a 128mb stick in it.

However, memtest still fails after taking the 128mb stick out and just testing the onboard memory.

So, is there any way to disable the 128mb onboard memory? If it is bad does the mobo need to be replaced?

thanks in advance.

no, I haven't contacted compaq since I believe it is past its warranty period.

well at least they are the best person to advice you if the entire motherboard needs to be replaced.
frankly speaking,
if its built onboard, I don't see a way to detach the ram so easily like our conventional modules
