I would greatly appreciate any help troubleshooting a problem I am having with my first build.
My problem is that my monitor, which works, never recieves a signal. Fans on the case and motherboard turn, the HD vibrates, LED's turn on, and nothing further happens. I don't know if the BIOS posts, but nothing indicates that it does. The optical drive won't open it's tray, though this may be unrelated. The system turns back off without trouble.
I have a chaintech vnf4 ultra socket 939 motherboard, an athlon 64 3000+ processor and a pci-e video card, a Leadtek nVIDIA GeForce 6200 Turbo Cache. My power supply is a 24-pin.
I tried disconnecting everything and removing the motherboard to check for case shorts. With everything outside of the case, I then removed and reinstalled the processor heatsink and fan, and then reconnected one dimm (and later two) dimms of ram and the video card, the keyboard, the monitor, and the mouse, and the motherboard power, and tried out the simpler system, turning it on by shorting the power pins with a screwdriver. Same symptoms - the fans turn, nothing else happens. I removed all the ram and turned it on to see if I could even get a beeb - nothing. Also reset the CMOS, with the same results.
Any suggestions? Is there something obvious a newbie might be missing? Are these symptoms of a bad video card or a bad motherboard, and are there ways to distinguish between the two (assuming parts to swap aren't available)? I live in Alaska, so it takes a week and costs some money to get any replacement parts to try out.
Thank you!
