Troubleshooting for Mac OS Tiger

Problem---

My G4 iBook is running Tiger with only 30gig HDD. With all my software and extras installed I have barely a gig of space left for future use. I bought an Omni 160gig external USB drive that is Windows and Mac compatible, but cannot get it to become a boot drive to install Tiger on it. I have followed all the necessary instructions of erasing/formatting/partitioning, with journaled enabled, etc. But still no go. Oddly, on the install Tiger screen, with the various drives on offer for install, my iPod shows it can accept an install. Yet my external says that I cannot.

Question--

Can someone please advice how to solve this problem?

I thought you could only install OS X to external Firewire drives, not USB...

iPods are recognised as valid external hdd's, hence the ability to install OS X on it.

The external device has a firewire connection to it, but the other end is a usb connection. Does that mean I have to find a firewire to firewire cable?

I wasn't aware that FW -> USB cables existed, but you definitely need a FW->FW cable (make sure it's the 6 pin FW cable too).
