Troubleshooting BAD Temp on C2D e6400

Hey everyone, okay,

THE PROBLEM: e6400 stock HSF, not staying under 60C on load with chip, on idle its at 44C.

i took the HSF stock fan off and on multiple times, finally 3rd time, making sure i heard the "click" of each corner going down over the cpu. still nothing

SOLUTION:
so i went and bought a mid-range HSF, Coolermaster Vortex TX, reviews say it does alittle better than stock, but nothing amazing.
So i'm going to clean off the thermal compound, re-apply Artic Silver and the Vortex TX, and see if the temp changes, if it does go lower, then ill reapply the stock cooler with Artic Silver, to test if it was just the thermal not helping make contact, if not, then keep the Vortex and be happy.

now heres where i need suggestions....what if its STILL running hot, with a brand new HSF and thermal on correctly.

suggestions for PLAN B to figure out what the problem is?

motherboard bios reading incorrectly?
CPU needs RMA?
 
Use Everest, or CoreTemp to check Temps. do not trust your bios or MB Software readings.

60c under load isn't good , but I dont believe thats a dangerous temp at all.

What is your rooms ambient tempature?
 
The P5B is well known for it's inaccurate temp readings... usually way higher than reality. You might do a search in the motherboard or cpu forums as this is a known defect with the P5B. 😉
 
I have the same set up as you and my mother board is giving me hi temps too but you should check core temp, it is way more accurare. PS. don't trust the botherboard temps.
 
I'm having the same issue with my e6400, only on a P5N32-SLI SE mobo. I had it on a P5B and had no issues, but I didn't like the board and wanted SLI.

Mine overheats while in the BIOS and shuts down unless I turn all 4 case fans (2x120, 1x92 and 1x80) onto HIGH. Then it idles at 63-65, which is STILL above Intel's thermal specs.

I'm doing the same thing in about an hour, stripping the factory thermal and reapplying Arctic Silver 5, and see what happens.

This is really strange since there's an OC review on this site talking about how easily these things oc with stock cooling and stay cool. I think they even unplugged the HSF at one point and it was fine. I think I may just have a bad chip.
 
When you reseat the HSF, check the contact on it. You'll see by how much of the thermal paste is disrupted. If it doesn't seem to be getting enough contact and you're postive its seated right, you'll have to lap the HS to try to make it flat for better contact.
 
Download Core Temp and see what temperature it reports. There's also the chance of your C2D's IHS being warped, in which case you have to lap it flat. Good luck with that one.
