Hey guys(and girls). I've been lurking for awhile and thought I'd join up finally. I'm pretty much a big tech-head, as everyone else here is, went to school for IT, work in IT, etc. Anyways, on to the purpose of this post(my first :) ).

I've got a system that's been giving me some lock-up problems. Odd thing is it seems as though it's only when playing games. The system will either completely freeze up(with the picture on the monitor), or will do a random reboot. System is a P4 3Ghz w/ HT, Intel D865GBF board, 512x2 Samsung PC2700, WD 80G SE, and a PNY GeForce5900 w/ 128MB.

Originally when I was having problems I had an ATI 9700. When I started to research it, I found out that sometimes Intel boards and ATI vid cards don't get along. So I thought no big deal, I'll switch out the vid card for an Nvidia, performance difference was negligible for me. This didn't solve my problem.

As I read around and ask around it seems the general consensus is either A) CPU Heat, or B) Memory. So I've tested the memory, which is another odd thing. I've tried two boot memory testers, Memtest86 and a boot troubleshooter app distributed by Eurosoft. The Memtest86 detects errors in the memory when both sticks are in there, but if I remove one or the other, they test out fine. The other troubleshooter will test the memory(and pass it w/o problems) except on the address line test, where the troubleshooter locks up(I've used this app on many PCs with no problems before).

Second, CPU heat. Does anyone know what the average temp of a P4 3Ghz is when under a consistent load?

If anyone has any input at all into this problem, please let me know. Thanks a bunch.

Haven't done extensive testing with one stick yet, but it's on the list of things to try in the next day or two. PSU is an Antec TruePower 430W

Update:
Took out one of the sticks of RAM and the machine ran fine. Plays games fine, runs Seti fine, both of which were tasks that would lock up the system. So from this I'm thinking it's either the memory or the memory controller/chipset on the board with problems. Agree, disagree?
