I recently received a mercury elite pro as a gift, I popped in a 3 TB Toshiba drive, and attempted to use it to do some back-ups, but I've been thwarted by a super flaky USB 3.0 connection.
1) Under win7 ult 64-bit, it continually mounts and unmounts itself. During the time that it's mounted I can start an aja disktest and confirm that I'm seeing USB 3.0 transfer speeds.
2) Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will not consistently mount it either.
This happens on both of my back-panel USB 3.0 ports, and on my front panel USB 3.0 ports. This made me suspect that maybe the drive was dead/dying, but when I tried plugging it into one of my USB 2.0 ports both ubuntu and win7 mount it consistently, and in fact, I was able to do a full image of my boot and data drives without any trouble under USB 2.0.
Somewhat confused, I thought maybe my USB 3.0 ports were to blame, so I tried a 3 TB Seagate Expansion Drive w/ USB 3.0 that I haven't used in a while and it is mounted by both Ubuntu and Win7 just fine on both back panel and front panel USB 3.0 ports.
So it would appear that the problem is with the new external, not with my MoBo or ports.
I'm not really sure what my next step should be. Any suggestions would be peachy-keen. Sadly OWC's live chat tech support is offline until 8am, I suppose I can talk to them about it tomorrow.😕
Edit: I tried mounting it via FW800 on my GF's Mac Pro and it mounted perfectly happily. Now my next target of suspicion is the actual USB 3.0 cable? Unfortunately I don't have an extra one lying around, the one that goes to the Seagate Drive doesn't use the square-ish connector on one end.
