Troubles with Outlook Express

Recently (for no apparent reason) I started to recieve the following error message when attempting to send mail.
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019, Error Number: 0x80004005

I have tried to restore my computer to earlier dates, unfortunately the recycle bin had been emptied, so the restore fails! I have tried the help topics at Microsoft and none of their suggestions have worked! (It tells me to delete an *.mbx file that doesn't exist on my computer!)

I am running WinXP Pro SPII, Firefox Ver 1.07 (or IE ver 6.0) , and Outlook Express 6.0. I have a DSL connection that accesses the internet fine.

I DID notice that while it is trying to send messages (in Outlook Express) it says "Not Connected" in the window...

I would REALLY appreciate some help with this! I currently CAN send e-mail with my yahoo (not from within Outlook Express) OR gmail accounts, but it's a pain!

I recieve mail fine on ALL my accounts.

What do you have your SMTP set at? Open up your Internet Accounts under Tools and tell us what connection you are using and what the properties are set at. Sending mail depends on the SMTP in most cases. That would be your ISP. Example, mine is SMTP.COMCAST.NET

The connection I am using isn't specifically noted. It is set-up for dirrect connection to the internet and says use Lan connections (or share the same connection with Internet Explorer). I didn't see anywhere that the smtp was listed!

It should be in OE/tools/account settings. You can't send mail w/o proper smtp settings. Keep looking for it.

Goto Properties for that connection, and click on the SERVER tab. Should be about the second line down.

Yes - this is what you should be seeing for a normal email account. (These are fictitious)

POP3

Something put a URL in there - not sure why. Delete it and type in your correct mail box and you SMTP. One is in and the other out.

Actually, better still - create a new account and make it default.
