troubles with my newly built system

i just built my dad a new system. everything seems okay except for the fact that every other time i reboot, the mouse and keyboard [both are ps/2] are not detected. basically the mouse cursor doesn't show up and the keyboard does not function when i am at the login screen. then i have to reboot and then they work fine. i am using windows 2000 professional. the motherboard is a tyan trinity 400 with a slot 1 p3 450. i am running with one stick of 256 MB pc133 SDRAM. i have downloaded the latest via drivers and service pack 2 for windows 2000. please help. thanks.

was this purchased new, or has the mobo been used previousl, have you ever attempted to hot swap the ps/2 components? The ps/2 port sounds partially fried to me, but it may be a software issue.

Have you tried running a repair using your win2k cd? Have you tried using a serial port adapter on your mouse and/or keyboard to see if it's the ps2 ports? (or usb mouse and keyboard)

thanks for your help guys. i used my usb optical mouse and that solved the problem. i assume the ps/2 mouse port is fried. usb is better anyways.
