hello guys,

Here's the problem: i left the computer on during wednesday night and since i didn't use it for a while, win2k shut down the hard drive. when i woke up in the morning and tried to log on, i heard the HD spin up and the screen froze for about 3 seconds, then the computer restarted itself. after the restart, bios posted that there's a primary HD failure (my maxtor). so i turned off the computer for 5 minutes and tried to boot up again. this time, i didn't get the bios error, but win2k gave me an error to the effect of "inaccessible boot area" or something followed by some memory locations. I tried to scan the drive with scandisk (no error in through surface area check) and reinstall the OS. Under the win2k setup, the HD is reported as "damaged or unformatted." Since I didn't want to erase everything on there, I tried to install win2k on another HD (my IBM). That went ok for a little while but it also reported the same trouble after I installed a new MB and processor. I've only had win2k for about a week. What's wrong? I'll scan the drives for viruses today t a friend's house, but I don't think that is the case. I'm really puzzled by this. Suppose I have to reformat my Maxtor, is there any software that will left me read the old data off of that drive? I have some important stuff on that drive. Thanks for your help!
