Trouble with Windows Update from XP

So far I haven't had that issue with XP, I used to get that once in a while on Win9.x machines and reinstalled Explorer to fix it. There's probably an easy fix rather than a reinstall of Explorer but I never took the time to find it. Did you try the suggestions in that MS tech article Q174360?

The other thing I can suggest is to try downloading the updates manually by going to the MS website, click the products link in the right-top corner, and select downloads. You should be able to get what you want from there. It's not a solution, but at least it's a temp work around.

I have no experience with XP, but have had similar problems with 98SE. I solved them by cleaning out my temp folder.
