Trouble with USR 56K external modem under WinXP

I have a little problem: if my modem is turned off while booting the machine, Windows XP cannot detect my modem (in modem properties says - 'not present'..so, I have to reboot the machine with the modem turned on to make it work.. This wasn't an issue in the previous versions of windows.. I've mailed the 'USR tech support' and i was told to upgrade the OS to SP1, so I did that, but nothing seems to changed in this case..I was wondering if anyone has any idea or solution how to fix this... thanx

Yep, I've noticed this too. I have a "USR Courier v.Everything EXT" modem, and W2K SP2 seems to not register it's presence if it is switched off when booting. I don't recall if this always worked on not, but have you tried going to Device Manager, and telling it to "Refresh", when the modem is turned on? It may re-detect/re-enumerate it then.
