Hi,

I'm having a problem with a computer I was building with some spare parts sitting around:

Tyan S1598C2 motherboard
AMD K6-III/450
128MB PC100 SDRAM
ATA66 13GB HD
Floppy Drive
different video cards

The problem is that when I turn the computer on, the cpu fan starts going, but I don't get any video, and it doesn't look like the drives power up. I get no beeps. I tried several different video cards: ATI Xpert 98 (PCI), Matrox Millennium G200 (AGP), and another AGP card. No difference for boot up. The case worked fine with a different motherboard. The drives worked fine with a different motherboard.

I have thin nylon washers installed between the board and the case (I've heard mixed feedback about whether these are needed).

Thanks,
Mentallo

Sounds like you have a IDE HD/Floppy cable installed wrong or processor not installed......

For these type of problems, remove everything except:
PowerSupply
Motherboard
CPU
1 stick of ram
Video Card
Monitor
Verify the Case-2-MB connectors are correct....only the Power-On is needed.

Get video display now? if so, great....just add one or two pieces of Hardware untill you have boot problems again.

Still doesn't boot to at Boot-Post screen? Read On.....
Had you been adjusting BIOS settings to tweak the system?
Also you could have a faulty BIOS or MB, but I really can't go into help here......I hope this isn't the case.

Good LUCK!

<< AMD K6-III/450 >>

try a regular K6-2 or an old socket 7 Pentium ....to see if you get a post and beyond...if successful..then check more on K6III and their issues
