Trouble with sata 2 hard disk and windows xp

Hi,

I just bought a 250GB maxtor sata 2 hard disk.

The existing machine , i have is a:
Windows XP SP2
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
MSI K8N Neo2 Platnium
1 GB Corsair 400 Mhz DDR RAM
80GB maxtor sata hard disk

The motherboard doesn`t support sata 2 but the new hard disk has a
jumper that you can set the speed from 3.0 Gbs to 1.5 Gbs.

I installed the new hard drive as a slave to the 80GB.
when i booted into windows the drive appeared in the windows disk management utility,
so i tried to format it but windows said it couldn`t read the drive.
i installed the windows version of maxblast 4 and formatted the drive.
the drive formatting ok and i rebooted the PC. the drive appeared fine in the bios too.
but when i booted into windows, the drive does not appear in My Computer
or in the windows disk management utility but does appear in max blast.

any suggestions?

There is no master/slave relationship with SATA as each port is independent. Take a lookise in CMOS Setup for any relevant mapping options.

Also check the storage controllers in Device Management and confirm correct driver.

Yeah, the driver is fine.
I installed the driver from the motherboard driver disk,
when i built the PC about 2 months.

In device manager, the driver appears as something like:
nVidia nforce3 sata controller v2.5
