I just finished building a new comp and I'm having problems getting it to connect to the internet. I have it hooked to the network and its sharing files with other computers but for some reason I cannot get it to connect to my router or the internet. My system is as follows:

Win98SE
P4 2.6C
A-bit IS7(using onboard Ethernet)

When I type 'winipcfg' into run the only ethernet adapter shown is 'PPP Adapter'. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? This is becoming very annoying.

Thanks

IPX/SPX
NetBEUI
TCP/IP

same exact ones I use on all my other comps. Another thing, to install win98 on my comp I had to use a fix that corrected a problem with my Ndis.vxd file. There was a bug that wouldn't let window98 boot with a cpu of 2.2mhz or more.

Could be that the sharing is done via NetBEUI and the TCP/IP does not work.

Check if the TCP/IP is set correctly and gets and IP.

I removed NetBEUI just to see if that would work. I looked at the settings under TCP/IP and its set to obtain IP address automatically. I also looked on my router and pulled up the DHCP client table and my new comp wasn't listed there. I'm really at a lost of what to do...

I would start from scratch.

Make sure that you have the Abit?s Win98se NIC drivers and the WIN98se CDROM is available.

Log to System Properties. Remove the NIC installation (and any Ghost Installation if there is one. Ghost Installations are the ?Ugly? Yellow Exclamation Marks!)

Log out and Restart the computer. During Restart log to the BIOS and disable the Mobo NIC. Let the computer reboot.

Once reboot Restart again get again to the BIOS and enable the NIC.

Note: This process is unfortunately necessary with WIN98 since removing the item from the System properties does not really uninstall faulty setting. It is usually not necessary with WinXP.

During the second reboot Win98 will ID the NIC and will ask for Drivers. Make sure you use the Win98 Drivers.

When the Drivers are installed check for correct installation.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Setting and Sharing.
