make sure the bios isn't caching the config to speed up boot. reset all to defaults.

and watch out for sandforce drives - they have issues with fast booting systems.

TRIM works in IDE only if you are using an IDE driver which supports it, most do not, some do.
AHCI also lets you have NCQ which improves performance

Oops, I assumed that the software for TRIM would be transparent, but since all the SSD drives are natively SATA, that's really not surprising. You know what they say about assuming.

heh, we all do that sometimes. I used to assume TRIM can ONLY work in an AHCI mode before leaning that support can be added to IDE via drivers 🙂

Anyways, you can get TRIM to work in IDE with the right driver, and you can live without TRIM and without NCQ. They increase speed but even without them it will be much much faster than a spindle drive.

Thanks for all the input guys!

This is a pretty busy week for me and in any spare time i get i'm enjoying geeking out in WoW:Cataclysm 😛

Planning a re-build / trouble shoot session over the weekend.

Update regarding the system at the moment, i re-instlaled with IDE/legacy mode. Windows + Drivers loaded smoothly. Couple of 'quirky' problems since then:

- had the one time when it froze just after POST, on the drive detection part.
- if anyone knows the WoW launcher, my system has been sitting on 'applying non-critical updates' since the weekend... The game runs fine, along with any other applicatiosn i use.
- windows updates failed to load properly on the restart, failed and said 'reverting changes' after taking longer than it should. This just happened last night.
