Trouble with my 4x4

I recently purchased a 1991 Isuzu Trooper II (the last year of the old body style). I fixed some rear brake problems, cleaned the interior, fixed the idle, and now I have another fun issue.

The 4x4 isn't working. It has automatic hubs and I am not familiar with these. Here are the symptoms I have and what I have tested:

Using the 4x4 selection lever, I can select 4x4 hi and 4x4 low. I can move in both modes without strange sounds (although the exhaust leaks and may obscure the sound).

My girlfriend verified that the front wheels were not rotating as I spun the tires in the snow (well the one wheel you would expect was not moving).

My driver's side CV shaft (is that what it would be? It has 2 CV joints) has ~1" of play in and out of the hub. I am thinking that this is related to the issue, as it may screw with the driver's side front hub. The passenger side doesn't have this issue.

I am really lost at what to do. I don't want to tear into the front driver's side hub as I have no idea how it goes together and would hate to lose/break parts of it.

I appreciate any help!

Are you sure that the transfer case is actually shifting? It would be easiest to tell if its going into 4 low, shift into it and drive around. The RPM should seem ridiculously high for the speed/gear combination. Some vehicles have cable actuated transfercases, if the cable between the lever and the transfercase stretches it won't shift.

Yeap. 100% sure of the transfer case shifting. Right now I am suspecting that the front axle having so much play in and out of the front hub may be the issue.

To answer another question, I don't think they are vacuum locked, as you need to roll forward 1 meter to engage them, then back another meter (w/o 4x4 engaged) to disengage the hubs.

After some reading, it sounds like I need to get a new snap ring on the axle with the in and out play, assuming I haven't destroyed the inner workings of the hub.
