Problem number one:
despite formatting and re-partitioning a whole bunch, windows sometimes (out of the many times i've tried to install vista) "cannot recognize a volume" that would be able to install it.
i found this weird way where if i disconnect the external hard drive that has the drivers so that vista can see my SCSI hard drive, and then plug it in AFTER the installation has already started, it'll

it just worked. my hard drive wasn't the first thing on my boot sequence.
