Trouble with installing NIC under NT 4.0

I'm trying to install the network on my friends laptop.

I'm using a D-link 660 CT. It's a PCMCIA NIC. I have the drivers for it and they seem to install ok. But when trying to ping other machines it just doesn't work. I get time out. And the LED's on the NIC doesn't react at all. The card work ok in Win98. The drivers are designed for NT 4.0 and as said before they start ok at bootup.

Also when inspecting the event viewer everything is ok.

I'm properly missing something in the setup. I'm mostly used to W2K, Win98 and Linux and don't have much experience in setting up NT 4.0 workstations.

Thanks :)

When you say the LEDs aren't responding properly, does that mean you're also not getting link lights? Have you checked the cable? How about the dongle? If the dongle (connecting the card and the ethernet cable) isn't the right one and/or if it's broken, you may get many of the same symptoms. If you have access to another laptop, try checking the card in there or if you have another pcmcia nic, try installing it on the laptop. Also, test the cable. If the card and the cable are okay, you will either need to replace the dongle or buy a new pcmcia nic (usually easier to do the latter).

I actually forgot to mention something important

The card works in Win 98 and it works very well. The physichal connection is present. (the hub detects it).

What are the normal protocols etc. to have installed when connecting to a Win 98 network?

Oops..must've skimmed over that in my brain-dead state.

Are you sure TCP/IP is installed and bound to the NIC? Is ipconfig showing that the NIC has an IP? Are you trying to ping inside or outside of your subnet? If inside, are you pinging by IP or netbios name? If outside, is your gateway configured properly?

The adapter is bound to an ipadress (192.168.0.2) with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The only strange thing that I can see is that when using ipconfig the name of the NIC isn't De660 but it is named DE6601.

I'm trying to ping inside my subnet.
