Hi There,

I've been trying to solve this problem for a couple of days now, and if anyone here has a solution I'd appreciate it immensely.

I recently purchased a new TV with an HDMI input. My HTPC was connected to my previous set via S-Video, which looked horrible, so I immediately acquired a DVI-HDMI cable to take advantage of higher resolutions.

I decided at the same time to reinstall Windows XP on my HTPC - I was pleased to have a picture via HDMI right off the bat, and completed the entire XP installation without any problems while connected via HDMI. After installing Windows, the first thing I did was install the latest ATI Catalyst drivers. The installation went without incident, and I was asked to restart the system. Windows came back up just fine at 1080i resolution.

Here's where the trouble begins - if I restart the system again immediately, even without changing a single setting, I am not able to get back into Windows. I see the system POST, and the Windows XP splash screen, after which I get absolutely nothing on my TV. I have no idea why this could be.

If I hit the reset button on the system and boot into safe mode I get a picture again, but booting into Windows regularily just doesn't work. Here's something that I find even more strange - I can get into Windows if I connect the TV via S-Video, and un-plug the DVI cable from the back of my HTPC. Once Windows is up and running, I can plug the DVI cable back in, switch my TV to HDMI input and violla, it works perfectly (until I reboot again, of course).

To summarize, it seems to work as expected for the first restart after installing the driver. After that, Windows will not load as long as the DVI cable is connected. Again, if I unplug the DVI cable, boot into Windows with S-Video display, then connect the DVI, it works great.

The only other thing of note is that when I have the DVI cable connected, I don't think Windows actually ever finishes loading. (In other words, I don't think it's just that I can't get any video output.) I can press keys / hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE as many times as I want and nothing happens.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I sincerely hope one of you can come up with a solution. Thanks in advance!

Are you turning the TV OFF when powering down the PC?

DVI-HDMI cables are high capacitance cables that could very well
still hold a charge over serveral minutes after everything is switched off.
