Trouble with catalyst drivers

I installed windows and installed motherboard drivers. Worked fine, reboot, installed catalyst drivers. Reboot, windows doesn't load. I've formatted several times, and each time I install catalyst drivers (tried an older version, as well as omega) same thing happens.

What's gone wrong (and why wont things stop screwing up on me!)

Athlon 2400 xp
Biostar k7-something(got it from a friend, dont know exactly)
9800 Pro

And yes it is a legal copy of windows. But it turns out to be my videocard some how....my friend came over and after screwing around with a few things we did a fresh install with a radeon 7000 in the computer, and it worked without a hitch. We powered off and put the 9800 back in, and had the same trouble again. Same story trying it out with 9800xt.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with my video card, but at least I know that's the problem. *sigh*, first my powersupply dies, then my motherboard dies, then my video card screws up on me. What next? :/

*edit for grammar

The 9800 card requires an additional power connector, right? Did you connect the 9800's power connector vs. just slapping it into the AGP slot?

It could be a defective video card, defective motherboard, or a defective power supply. The fact that the older less-power hungry videocard works would seem to rule out the motherboard. I'd be looking at the power issues, whether at the card itself via the power connector, or the power supply.

As for things breaking down on ya, hey, that's just natural. Don't fret too much about it. It's annoying and frustrating, for sure. But as they saying goes, "this, too, shall pass".
