Trouble with bananas.

Man I got a big problem....My bananas go bad too fast. I only go to the food store once a week....by then whatever bananas I have left are almost black, no matter if they were green when I got them. I always heard not to put bananas in the fridge....why I wonder? I tried it a few times...the bananas taste better cold, although they age just as fast. Any solution? No I'm not going to the store more frequently.....

bananas will age much faster in the fridge. I only like them when they are slightly green and a tiny bit from full ripreness.

edit: if I can't eat them all, I freeze them. they taste great frozen and will stop ripening!

For some reason, this thread is just too comical to take seriously. 😀

Oh, no wonder. Yeah, stupid crap happens like this all the time if you're a liberal bastard.

...hey, where'd the quote go? You deleted it, drib! Awh, this was going to be funny too. 🙁

Me...liberal? WHFO. Look I post a serious question here...can't get a straight answer. Arrg....

Freeze bananas? Never heard of it before. Another banana project....

Ok ok ok. I think you're just not buying them ripe enough. My mom (for lack of a better reference, but she's the best one that I know of! 🙂) always buys them when they're still a little green, and then they get eaten when they look more of the traditional yellow. Usually within a couple days. After that, they will quickly turn bad, so it's all about the ripeness timing I think! 🙂

True...and I'm not talking in the lazy sense. I think it's something psychological...like when your mom or someone makes you food it always tastes great, but you make the same thing and it's mediocre.

I buy them in staggered levels of green. That way, they ripen progressively, instead of all at once.

LOL,Harvey,we buy bananas in the same way... now that is a frightening thought isn't it ? 😀

I do the staggered green trick also. Still after a week they're all bad. Is there an ideal temp. to store them? I just hang them on a little wooden banana tree/hanger on top of the fridge. Anybody try storing them in a wine cooler?

Look I need a constant supply of yellow/ripe bananas.....or my parrots attack me.

Banana Fact: Due to the fact that Banana's are a tropical fruit, they are not able to withstand cool tempuratures. They will quickly turn brown and ripen when chilled. Kind of the same effect as if it were turning fall and the leaves started to turn on the trees.

When you buy your banana's buy them when they are a bit green, make sure that they are put in a plastic sack instead of a paper one when you buy them. Put them in the top of the sack if you prefer using paper, to keep them from getting bumped around and brused, they are a pretty delicate fruit. Paper sacks make fruits and veggies ripen faster. Also avoid keeping them in a dark place.

Hey! That's my philosophy on dating! 😀

This is painfully obvious that I question your . . . well, let's just say that this is damn obvious:

Buy less bananas when you go grocery shopping.

I can't believe I was the first one to suggest it . . ..

ethicalsangel -- Putting fruit in any bag traps the ethylene gas given off by the fruit which will make it ripen sooner.

Jehovah......Eh? Look god, I need a supply of bananas that will be edible, that means nice and yellow, after one week. Doesn't sound so hard. You made heaven and earth in seven days. Can't a banana last that long?

Thanks for all the ideas:

Keep them out of bags.
Keep them room temp (I guess).
Keep them in a well-lit place.
Don't bump them during transport.
Freezing suspends the ripening problem.
By some green ones, some yellow ones.
Buy only enough to have one left on the last day. (very hard to pull this last one off)
Any others?

I have this same problem, and have gradually stopped buying bananas because of it. My parents' for some reason do not have this problem... weird. I understand they spray the bananas with a ripening agent shortly before putting them out on the shelf..

David Letterman, a few years back, had demoed a solution on the air: Use a knife to remove sections of the banana which had turned brown and gone bad, and fill the removed section with banana-flavored spackle. 😀
