I'm an intel guy but my friend is having issues with a new AMD system. He has the gigabyte Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H and 2x2GB of mushkin blackline. CPU is an x4 965 and for now he's using the onboard hd 4290.

Apparently when he boots the windows dvd it gets stuck at the "setup is starting screen", and he also notices that the black "starting windows" with the pretty logo appears for a really long time (5 minutes). I haven't experienced either issue with my core 2 machines.

He has checked the dvd (drive and disc), he tried both kinds of SATA ports, but I couldn't think of anything else. I suggested he reduce the vcore to 1.3v but that didn't do anything either. No other peripherals other than usb kb/mouse.

Another friend of mine did have similar issues with mushkin memory with an i5 system. Could that be the cause? I have mushkin ddr2 and it's fantastic, but I don't have ddr3 which they both used.

Tell him to try to load Fail safe config on the BIOS and try it again. I could think of it a few things...its either the DVD drive...or the CPU.

Or the memory is bad. Windows installs that don't finish can many times be tied to faulty memory. At least that has been the case with me. Run memtest and check. Or trying pulling one stick and installing with 2GB.
