Ok, I've got this 56k modem that connects at 115kbs for some reason but that is beside the point I THINK However, when it does connect it doesn't show a connection icon at the bottom of the screen like usuall. It does connects to my isp, (I've tried 2 ISPs btw)
but when I open my browser explorer or netscape, I get page not found. I do get an ip address when I connect, I've checked ipconfig. I've tried deleting windows networking and reinstalling. Tried deleting all network protocols and reinstalling. I've tried updating the modem driver as well. Running windows 98. Could I have a virus? has anybody ever experienced such weirdness? Thanks in advance. I always get good help when I post here.

If you are authenticating on to your ISP, then
the problem lies within the browser settings.

You may want to make a NEW IE CONNECTION.
Control Panel \ Internet Options \ Setup

Make sure that "Automatically detect settings is checked.
If that does not work, try unchecking it.

Ok it turned out to be that winsock was corrupted so here's how to fix it.

1) Go to add and remove program
2) Click on the windows setup tab
3) Take the check mark out of COMMUNICATION
4) Click apply
5) Wen asked to reboot say no.
6) Click Start
7) Click on Run
8) Type regedit
9) Follow the path HKEY LOCAL MACHINES
10) System
11) Current control set
12) Services
13) Winsock2
14) Right click
15) Select delete
16) Go back to add remove programs
17) Click on Windows setup
18) Put check back in COMMUNICATIONS
19) When asked to reboot say yes
After rebooting, try to browse.
It may ask for your Windows 98 C.D.

Just in case anybody else has the same problem.
