My client has this issue that I have been unable to resolve and it is driving both of us insane...

He had a DSLExtreme connection hooked up to a Netgear MR814 wi-fi router which was extremely slow (but never lost connection for five years), so he got the Linksys to replace it. The router and modem are connected to an old Dell desktop in his bedroom. He has two devices connecting wirelessly: his Latitude D610 laptop (both PCs running XP) and his iTouch. The laptop is set up in the kitchen about 20 feet away, the iTouch is all over the apartment. We installed the new router yesterday and are both scratching our heads - both his iTouch and my iPhone maintain a constant signal (and so does his desktop PC), but the Latitude keeps losing it - goes in and out. Here's how it is set up:

Encryption: 10-key WEP
Firewall: on (Linksys website says to turn it off?)
Channels: we tried 6 (default) and 1
B/G/etc: mixed
The wi-fi radio indicator in the taskbar sometimes shows green, sometimes a red cross, seemingly independently of whether or not the connection actually works, meaning it could be red and fully functioning
He has wireless mice both on the laptop and on the desktop (but this wasn't a problem before).

What can we try? It works really fast when it does, it's just not stable...

Just a shot in the dark. Have you tried pointing the antennas on the router in different directions? Does the signal strength get stronger the closer the laptop is to the router?

Are you using the wifi configuration software from the wifi card manufacturer or the zero configuration application from Windows ?
If its the first scenario then try to update the software from the maker's site. If the issue persists then switch back and forth from that application to Windows Zero configuration.

Also try to use a wpa type of key instead of wep, i experienced a case where a Windows Vista system has similar behavior when connecting to a modem-router using a wep key.

Out of curiosity, does the laptop have an Intel Pro wireless card? I know that the Linksys routers sometimes have had issues with Intel Pro chipsets (don't remember which series). Even with the Tomato firmware, there were certain NVRam settings that had to be set to correct the issue of instability. Not sure how to do this on a stock firmware though.
