Trouble starting the car

Had trouble starting the car a few hours ago after being unused for about a week. The weather had been slightly above or around 0 deg C (though kept in a closed garage adjacent to heated rooms). The engine turned fine, but wouldn't "catch" the first time I tried to start (key was held all the way for maybe 5 whole seconds). The second time, it did start, but died right away. The third time I started with partial throttle open, and it worked, but a huge cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust and the engine shook pretty violently. Took maybe 15-20 seconds before the exhaust became sort of clear.

Unfortunately I cannot tell what colour the smoke was... whitish? Not sure if it had any blue to it. Did not try to smell the smoke either.

Would this have anything to do with the fact that my engine burns oil, or that there is a little bit of oil in my coolant overflow tank? Cracked block? Bad head gasket?

gaskets might be leaking, specifically the head gasket? Any oil/fluid seaping around gaskets that you can see?

could be internal ...

My 96 Saturn sat for about a week too... In cold temps. For the first time ever I actually had to floor the gas to get it to start. Once it was running for about 10-15 seconds it would run under its own power.... A few minutes later it was behaving just fine like normal.

Sitting is never great, especially in the cold.

Oil in coolant overflow leads one to suspect the head gasket or any other point where oil and coolant can potentially intermingle (oil/coolant intercooler).

Can you do a compression check? Is your cooling system becoming pressurized when it's still cold?
