Trouble retrieving information of Maxtor 1 touch II 250 gig external usb hard drive. I was using the hard drive last night and then I gave it to my girl friend (the vain of my existence) and now the .ini file is supposedly corrupted and my computer does not even recognize that there is an external hard drive plugged in. I had a lot of very valuable information on there. If any body can tell me how to get to the information off the hard drive, so that I can transfer the data over to another hard drive and reformat the Maxtor and repartition it.

Does your system recognize USB drives in the CMOS? If so, check to see that it's still there at bootup, and your CMOS is set to recognize external USB devices.

Buy another enclosure and pull the drive out of the old one. It may be the controller card on the current enclosure. You can get one from NewEgg for about $20-30.
