Trouble reformatting

When I put the WinXP CD in my computer and select boot from CD-ROM, it just goes into windows.

How can I get it to go to the setup?

How old is your motherboard? Does it support booting from CDs? Are you certain the CD is bootable?

It's a brand new motherboard, I think it's called an A7N8X-E Deluxe or something like that.

How do I tell whether or not the CD is bootable? It's a bulk version of Windows XP that my dad uses for work.

Go into the BIOS and find boot order or something similarly named. Change first boot device to CD-ROM.

Edit: It's bootable, no worries there.

Duh, just read the first post a little more carefully. You may need to take the HD out of the boot order for the first go round.

1st Boot Device = CD-ROM
2nd Boot Device = CD-ROM
3rd Boot Device = CD-ROM

After the first reboot on the windows install go immediately into the BIOS and change it back. Setup will resume after rebooting.

I changed the first, second, and third boot device to CD-ROM and still no luck.

Oh yeah... I think there was an installation problem with Windows, I dunno if that might make a difference. I can't even log in, it says the Administrator domain does not exist, or something to that effect.

first go to the bios, and make sure the boot order is cd before hd. then if it still doesnt work, look to see if it is trying to boot from the cd, but then changes its mind and goes to the hd. this means the cd doesnt work.

OK, assuming you are trying to do a fresh install of XP on a drive with XP on it, I would do this.

Do a google search for Delpart.
Copy it onto a boot floppy and boot to a command prompt.
Run Delpart and reboot.
I guarantee you won't be booting into Windows anymore.

You need Delpart if the drive is formatted using NTFS. If it's FAT, you can delete that partition using fdisk.

I've seen this happen before. I think it's a combination of a slow responding CD drive and a fast acting BIOS. No matter what you try, the thing just keeps booting of the HD.
