Trouble Playing GT4

I rented Gran Tourismo 4 yesterday, popped it in and it said " Disk Read Error." I popped out the disk and it was quite scratched up, so today I took it back and got another copy. This one also had a disk read error. It was scratched a bit, but no more then some of my other games. Could it be my PS2? I don't think so 'cause it plays my other games fine. Could it be because of scratches again, or is it some other problem?

ps2's are notorious for this problem.if other games are still playing fine, assume they wont be in short order.

Try cleaning the laser. You can also try putting the PS2 on its side. What version is your PS2? Some of the older ones have trouble with dual layer games.

GT4 is known to cause that problem because it's a dual layer dvd, while most PS2s are single layer. For whatever reason it requires better calibration of the laser to play dual layer games, and PS2 lasers are already crappy to begin with, particularly the early systems. There was a thread about the disc read error a few days ago, and there's a link to a faq posted in there that tells you how you can send it to Sony and they'll fix it for free. My friend got it done and they shipped it back within a week.
