trouble overclocking thunderbird on a7v

He guys please help me out,

I just picked up a thunderbird 700 and a a7v with multiplier. The l1 bridges on the chip are connected. So i tried overclocking but i can't get past 800 mhz. When i set it to 900 mhz the computer won't even post. at 850 mhz it boots to windows where i can keep
on clicking on registry error messages forcing me to shutdown by resetting the computer.
I set the voltage to 1.85, my chip temperature (bios) is 48 c/118 F.
What am i doing wrong?
Is it the promise controller?
Iam running the memory at 100 mhz just to be sure but no luck..

My system:

-approved power supply
-asus geforce 256 ddr
-nic
-soundblaster
-a7v
-thunderbird 700

thanks,

Marco

What heatsink are you using for your Tbird? 48C at bootup sounds pretty high if you're not doing anything intensive.

is that BIOS temp the probe or the motherboard?. I have the exact setup and it will do 850 at 1.7 and 900 at 1.85. Not too sure what your prob could be.

their is an option in the bios called system somehitng... it defaults to optimal.... set it to normal... you should be able to overclock slightly better...

I find it very hard to believe that you only get 31c for 908, is your sensor touching the core or heatsink?

i tried 900/850 with 100 mh fsb, i have the bios set to normal. i have both my ide dev. on the promise controller. should i up the voltage on the vio (jumper)

well you might need a better heatsink to get it stable at 850. I had the cheap coolermaster (boxed fan) and it locked at 900 after a while. You really shouldn't expect 900 , you do after all have a 700 core. 800 would have been a better buy.

Gee, then my Duron must have had a what core? hehe. Maybe the Cache size has something to do with it.

By the way, i don't understand why the transistor count is different for Duron and Tbird. I thought the only difference was the cache size?

Nope, the TBird and Duron are not like the CelII/PIII where a PIII with bad cache can be downgraded to a CelII. The TBird/Duron are the same basic core, but not on the same process. Not interchangeable.

Rover: a 100MHz overclock may be all you get. My TBird 800 will do 900 easily, with no voltage bump, etc. It will do 950 with 1.85 volts, but the temp get up around 50C when the system is loaded. Too high for me, so I bumped back down to 900. However, better cooling than what you've got might help you make 850 stable. Sounds like your temps are a tad high right now.

Thankz guys,

Got a bit carried away by some success stories 🙂 , My new cooler is on the way,
Im getting back to y'all when i set it up.
Yeez sold my athlon classic to my gf to do some overclocking... have to wait until
the 900 is getiing cheap and try again.

regards,

Marco
