Trouble OCing...

ok, here's the deal.... first I went to 10x with stock FSB (333) and fed a voltage of 1.1625... for the cpu in bios...

Everythng went fine....
then I increased it another .5 to make it 10.5 and now the cpu coltage is at 1.175...

Then I tried doing 11x multi and even with a cpu voltage of 1.225 its not working fine...
the board posts and everythng, as soon as I open prime 95 within 10 to 20 seconds, it reboots.... why is this?? is this because there is not enough power for the CPU?

I'm really annoyed by this.... some one help me... if u need any more details jus fire it at me straight....

the most annoying thing is, I OCed my friend's QX9650 to 4.1 on stock HSF.
I am using stock HSF too.. waiting for my true...

On load right now with a 10.5 multi, the temps go as high as 70 to 72 C.....

Why drop >$1k on teh uber CPU but allow yourself to be overclock limited by the anemic stock HSF when a vastly superior product can be purchased for another $50? (Tuniq120 or TRU-EX)

I just don't get the rationale, but I see it a lot on the forums so clearly there is some basis to the thought processes involved here.

At any rate, yes very likely the Vcore you are feeding the CPU is not enough to make the CPU stable at those clocks and those temps.

You either need to drop the temps (reduce Vcore, or improve HSF) or you need to crank up the Vcore and hope you can outpace the stability issue with more Vcore versus the even higher temps you are going to create by increasing Vcore.

Personally I'd pony-up another $50 and at least get a Tuniq120 before proceeding to fry your spendy CPU.

Have you also considered that you have 4 sticks of ram, whilst your friend might only have 2 ? And do you recall the voltage you fed to your friends qx9650 ?

@IDontCare.... My TRUE is supposed to come in a couple of days....

@markvenice.... He and I got the exact same setup, except that he has 4 sticks of 2GB makin it 8 total....
anyways, i brought his upto 400*10.5 on the stock HSF with jus 1.25V on cpu... now thats why i'm pissed off....

Jus a small note... the stock HSF on this qx9650 is really massive as compared to the previous ones in the core2 line and its also really good to look at with all LEDs and stuff

Same mobo too ? There's always the odd chance of having a 'bad' chip, that simply doesn't take to kind to overclocking. How about timings on the ram btw ? Have you loosened those up a little or tried giving the ram more voltage ?

RAM is at 1.9v at timing 5-5-5-15....

I doubt if its a 'bad' chip as u say.... (in which case, it is jus my ^%$#& bad luck).....

Still, even a bad chip would be able to do 3.6 easily.... mine is stuck at 3.5...

Yes, we both have the same mobo.... actually we bought everythng in 2 quantities except for the ram, which was outta stock so I settled with 2 1GBs on the secondary for the time being....

I am getting very irritated with this... Also, the temps are maxing out at 70-72C on full load prime95 after an hour or so... I've never had somethng go above 58-62 in the past, is this ok??

A friend of mine is also having the same issue as you do.
His QX9650 can do 3.6Ghz with 1.33V, but running OCCP brings the core temp all the way to 70C, and this is being cooled by TRU-120 (not the extreme one) with an S-Flex.
Also, the idle core temp is like 45~47C even though the case temp is 32~35C.
Another thing we noticed was that core temps are very different from one another, core1 being the highest.
Since the cpu is not returnable, he's going to try to exchange it with another one.

the restarting during P95 is likely due to not enough voltage.
maybe stop playing with the multiplier and leave it at its max stable (10.5?) and play with the FSB to maximize ur OC.

did u actuallypay $1k for the cpu?

I wouldn't mine an Extreme series chip And as everyone says, its the voltage, not all chips are stable at the same voltage, some guy on the EVGA forums has a similiar set-up to mine in terms of board/cpu/ram and his chip needs like 1.65 to be stable at 3.9ghz, after a certain point the chips are all different in the voltage they need to be stable so don't be pissed you don't go as high with the same voltage.

Mine came with a cooler that's the size of a Zalman 9700. Don't know how good it is but it's massive compared to the usual intel provided cooler.

Give it the juice! Those yorkies like to get juiced to pour out the speed. But be careful with an inadequate cooler or you will be boiling water fast!

EDIT if you think your temps are bad with Prime95 try linpack. I swear that rapes (could not think of a better word) the cpu. Nothing makes it hotter faster. It's like the stress tool in TAT but it hits ALL cores. I prime in the 60's (400x10) on a TRUE but will get into the 80's with that! :shocked:
