Hi Everyone,
I have an old Fujitsu Lifebook B series (I think its the 5020, but I'm not 100% sure since I can't find anything on the case about the specific model) and I'm trying to install windows xp on it. Since its an old ultraportable, it lacks a cd drive and the bios doesn't support booting from usb. I found a way around this limitation by running a bootloader off a usb floppy drive and then booting a usb stick.
This worked great and I was able to install ubuntu linux and windows 7 from usb sticks, but this laptop is old enough and specialized enough that there aren't proper linux or windows vista/7 drivers for it. Because of the drivers issue, I've decided to install xp (the operating system it came with originally). Unfortunately Windows XP refuses to install off a usb drive.
I've followed several different guides to installing windows xp from a flash drive, including using USBMultiboot10, usb_prep8, PE2USB alone, and grub4dos. Most didn't work at all. I had the most success with grub4dos where I used the bootloader to mount and boot the windows xp iso on the flash drive.
The windows installer starts to boot, finishes loading its drivers, and then bluescreens when it says starting windows at the bottom of the screen. The error code is 0x7b. From what I've looked at, this error code means that windows lost contact with the boot device. I could probably get it to work with a usb optical drive, but I don't have one and I don't really want to go out and buy one unless I have to.
Does anyone have any experience with installing windows off a usb stick onto older machines that don't natively support booting from usb or any other suggestions that may help?
Thanks for your input.
