trouble installing vc++ on new macine with xp pro

I'm trying to install microsoft vc++ 6.0 on my new system with sp pro on it and it gives me the following error:

"16 Bit Windows Subsystem---
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The System file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications."

Actually, i have seen this before when trying to run/install some randoms apps, including a directx sdk. I think this might explain my problems with matlab too...

anyone know whats going on here and how to fix it? my copy of vc++ worked fine on my last computer with xp home and a friend just used it on his xp pro machine.
