Hi i just got my 700mhz duron and an Asus A7V and i'm having trouble putting the heatsink on, i can get one latch on but i feel i have to put too much pressure on the other to get them both to latch properly....any suggestions?

p.s. i'm very sure about this but you AREN'T supposed to remove those little pads, right?

p.p.s. oops forgot that this is a retail cpu so i'm sure whatever heatsink that came with the processor

hehe, i had to have my friend push down the clip with a screwdriver, while I held the processor up a little to prevent putting too much force on the chip. I don't know how I'm going to get it off when/if I get an alpha :)

My dad used a screw driver (2 actually) to get it on, then had to get it off since i never removed the tape for the thermal paste and put it on again <g>, but thanks for your help!

hehe, that's weird, i never had to use any kinds of tools with mine heh, i just used my hands and pressed down, didn't do anything to the processor and didn't have any airpockets either...heh, oh well :)

Those pads are for stabilizing the hs against the CPU die. It's a precautionary measure to make sure that the HS is not installed out of alignment plus also to prevent people from exerting too much pressure on the chip trying to force it in.

I am bumping this because I am having the same problem. The clip on my heatsink (the retail one, it is made by Tai Sol) is very tight. It does not seem to work the same way as the one in the manual or the ones in an article by jonnyGURU that I read.

Just to be sure I am doing it right: the clip has one end shorter than the other. I slip this end over the middle lug on the "back" of the socket. I then hold the heatsink flush with one hand and press the longer end of the clip down towards the "front" of the socket (where it has the "step" that says Socket 462 or whatever). I hold the clip down with one hand and I try to pull the end of the clip down/out to get it to latch on with the other.

It is taking a HUGE amount of effort to push the clip down, and when I do, it is not extended far enough to be able to latch on to the lug using just my hands. I think I could get it on there using tools but it seems like that would be putting way too much pressure on the chip.

I don't want to damage my Duron, help! Also, the pink thermal pad stuff is a little messed up from me trying a few times to get the thing on, is that going to cause me problems?

I had a pretty hard time getting the retail HSF on too. I used a screwdriver to help guide the second clip down.

I put the shorter clip side on first. After hooking the shorter side on, I pushed this short clip as far onto the CPU socket as it would go to allow the second longer clip more clearance on the other side.

It took a lot of strength to push it down and guide the second clip on.
