Trouble installing ATI Drivers in Ubuntu

MDE

Lifer
I installed Ubuntu (Edgy) on a spare hard drive to mess around with and immediately ran into trouble. My screen resolution is locked at 1600x1200 60Hz (it says 86Hz in the Screen Resolution drop box). So I tried installing video drivers with guides from here (black screen on boot up after Ubuntu startup splash screen) and here (just didn't work) with no luck. Any suggestions for a relative Linux newbie?

EDIT: This is with the AMD64 version of Ubuntu and a Radeon X1900 XT.

Yeah, it showed the other resolutions but just went right back to 1600x1200.

Ah, I've seen a fresh install locked at just one resolution (only one resolution available) and reconfiguring xorg (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg) would solve it. You could backup your xorg.conf and give that a try.
