trouble installin windows xp

finished building my computer and now im ready to install windows xp. i put in the disc when it says insert boot disc and then press enter but when i do it tells me boot disk read failed or something! whats going on? is it because i put the disc in a DVD-RW drive or something? please help

You'll have to go into the motherboard BIOS and change the boot order/priority. Usually hitting the DEL key while system is booting will get you to the BIOS.

Probably your current boot order (usually default setting).
1. HDD
2. Floppy?
3. CD-ROM (DVD-RW)

Change it to this..

1. CD-ROM ( DVD-RW) -
2. HDD

Save, exit then reboot system. Leave the windows XP inside gthe DVD-RW.

Or your disc might be heavily scratched and hence unreadable. SKORPIO's post has a more common reason with a higher probability, though.

Yeah, sounds like it's not booting to the CD.

Don't muck around with boot order just to load the OS. There should be a F-?? key to set a one-time boot order, check the POST screen or your mobo manual.
