I am trying to install Ubuntu on an old Compaq 7478. It stops installing and drops me to BusyBox. The last line says "marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle". I have tried adding nolapic noapic noapm as kernal parameters with no luck. How can I get past this and what exactly does that error mean?

Sometimes speedstep can cause things like that. Go into the BIOS and try killing speedstep(if it exists on something that old), spread-spectrum, ACPI/APM...

K6-II eh? that's a little past retirement age, but anyways... see if there's anything in the BIOS about "powernow", that was AMD's old throttling thing, but it looks like only K6-II+ had it.

Well I unplugged the DVD drive just leaving the HD and CD drive and it installed fine. But, why?
