Trouble getting unmatched subwoofer and satellites to work together

My brother has a Dell Dimension E510 from a few years ago that came with a Dell 2.1 system, but the satellites have gone bad.

I have some spare satellite speakers, but not an extra subwoofer. Does anyone know if I can get these to work together and how?

Does the sub work on its own without issues now?

My first thought would be to hook up the 2.0 and subwoofer sets up independently (either two of the soundcard outputs and set it to stereo surround) or get a 3.5mm splitter and hook up both sets. Hooking up both independently would mean having to adjust two volume levels, but that might be for the best anyway since who knows what would happen with volume matching if you managed to get the subwoofer to actually connect to the new satellite speakers.

Does that make sense / do you think that would work with his sub?

(I'm not sure if you can hook up just the sub for the 2.1 system of if it requires the satellite speakers... and if that makes it impossible to work for whatever reason)

He seems to have stopped caring and is just using the satellites without the sub now. It sounds way too thin imo... I'll try what you suggested when I get a chance.
