Trouble getting old NF7-Sv2 to POST

So I'm putting together a linux box from some stuff I had sitting around. It's an NF7-Sv2 with an AthlonXP mobile, Radeon 9500Pro, 512MB PC3200, using onboard sound, a Western Digital WD800JD SATA HDD.

When I turn the power supply on (as in the switch in the back) a red LED on the NF7 comes on - as I remember it doing before. When I push the PC power button a green LED comes on next to that one, I believe that's normal as well. All the fans power up and it even looks like the mobo is possibly looking at the DVD-ROM drive to see if its got a bootable disc in it.

However, I get no beeps or anything out of the internal speaker, I see no activity on the HDD LED on the front, and I get no video out of the Radeon 9500Pro.

I'm sort of at a loss for how to proceed. I suppose I can put my stick of RAM in my main PC to run Memtest just in case. I'm concerned I hear no beeps out of the PC speaker, it would be helpful if I heard some kind of error beep code, but at this point I'm not sure what that means, not hearing anything. Could the board be dead? Bad power supply?

Oh, the PSU specs are as follows (it's the PSU that came with my cheapo Rosewill case):

3.3V - 20A
5V - 30A
12V - 15A

Does that sound like enough for my listed hardware? I'm not sure, it's a 300W supply as far as I know.

I'm a little suspicious of the fact that I get nothing out of the video card either. Sometimes the monitor will act like it's getting at least the start of a video signal, but it will only last for a second. Nothing appears on the screen, the monitor LED just goes green for a second like it's getting a valid signal.

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated guys. Thanks.

Hello teiresias,
I?m new to the forum but not to this motherboard, I?ve had three of them over the years and one of my boys is still using an NF7-S2 with a +2800 Athlon chip.

The red light means you?re getting power to the board [the BIOS is capable of error beeps if it doesn?t post so hopefully that speaker is working see: http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=98625 ] The case fans seem to indicate the front panel switches are hooked up properly. Try disconnecting the DVD burner.

You cleared the CMOS, of course, but did you try clearing it and then holding down the <insert> key as you power up? Hold it down for a minute or two to see if you get the memory count [hit delete for Setup if you get it.] Replacing the battery is worth a shot. The monitor seems to be working, but do you have another video card you can try?

The problem must be something basic [it always is once you find it.] Good Luck!

It turned out to be the 9500 Pro, which is a shame, because it was a great card. I stuck my old original Radeon in there and it came on fine.

So, I think I'm going to buy a cheapo Geforce 6200 AGP to use in this rig. It's a Linux box, so mainly just want it to run XGL/Beryl/Compiz, and since it's Linux, I figure a Nvidia will give me less headaches in the long run anyway.

Thanks for your help.

RIP 9500 Pro. :(
