Trouble getting AIW Radeon audio to work with an Asus P4S333

Greetings,

I am running an AIW Radeon (not a 7500 or 8500, just the
Radeon version) on my new P4 setup:

Asus P4S333 motherboard
1.8A Northwood @ 2.4GHZ
512MB Kingston/Nanya PC2100 DDR
AIW Radeon 32MB DDR
six assorted hard drives (330GB total)
Afreey 10X DVDROM
Iomega/Plextor 12x10x32 CDRW
SBLive Value
Intel 10/100+ Server NIC
Maxtor ATA100 PCI Controller card

I have a clean install, dual boot (win98SE/WinXP) setup, but I can't get sound
from a video source input through the input AV (purple box) connector to work.
I have the output cable of the AIW connected to the "line-in" of the SBLive card
per the AIW setup instructions just like it was with my old system and my AIW
128 Pro card...video comes in just fine, but I get no sound.

The only indication that there is anything wrong with the setup is that in both
Win98SE and WinXP, the following "component" will not setup correctly and it
shows up in the hardware profile with a yellow exclamation mark next to it in
both OSes:

"ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar"

The Asus P4S333 comes with onboard sound which I have disabled, but I have
a sneaking suspicion that there is some conflict which is motherboard-related
since this component refuses to set up correctly under either OS.

I am not using the onboard audio of the motherboard because it only has line-in,
mic-in, and line-out connectors and I have a "fourpointsurround" speaker setup
and need the left and right out connectors that the SBLive posseses.

I've tried a number of things and scoured the ATI website for answers, but no
solution yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

John

Have you tried updating the driver manually? What OS/driver set are you using? MMC version?

I tried updating that particular components driver but the only thing
I succeeded in doing was getting the yellow exclamation mark to
change to a red "X"...which is still not the desired result.

As far as I could tell, I had all of the latest drivers downloaded for
both Win98SE and WinXP...can't remember which versions exactly
and I am at work at the moment, so it'll be another hour before I
can get home to check what I have.

I will check out www.asusboards.com when I get home and make
sure I have the latest and greatest drivers and if not, load them
up. I set this system up just a week or so ago and downloaded
the latest drivers from ATi.com, so I would think I would not be too
far off. It's just odd that the same thing is screwed up in both
Win98SE and WinXP.

I ran across something at asusboards.com that a fellow used a
.sys file from Me or something and renamed it and substituted it
for another .sys file and cleared up something to do with the audio
crossbar function...but I can't find the discussion in the forum at
the moment...and this may or may not have anything to do with
the problem I am experiencing...

It is odd that all your other WDM components are fine. Make sure the WDM driver versions match, maybe(likely) you have a conflict with your old rage drivers. Did you reinstall your OS when you replaced your Rage card?

Since I was upgrading my motherboard, CPU, and memory, I did
a clean install of Win98SE and WinXP, so there should not have
been any old drivers lying around to trip things up.

I'm just about to head home from work, so I will check on driver
versions and make sure everything is up-to-date. I seem to recall
something about a new version of MMC (7.5?) being out and new
"universal" drivers on the ATI website, so I will check that out.

And yes, the other WDM drivers/components seem to be loaded up
fine, just the "WDM TV audio crossbar" or whatever it's called is not
loading up right...not sure if this is the cause of no audio-in, but it's
a problem nonetheless...

Leaving to check...

I'm trying to get it to work under Win98SE first and if I have no luck, then I
will attempt it with WinXP. I uninstalled all the ATI software, removed all
references to ATI in the Registry, rebooted, and installed all of the latest
drivers and MMC 7.1....but still, I am getting no audio when I input a movie
into the video-in box. Still getting the yellow exclamation mark by the
"ATI WDM TV Audio crossbar".... STill wondering if there is some conflict
between my P4S333 motherboard and the AIW OR my SBLive Value and
the AIW board...

Man this is a pain in the behind...

I'll piddle some more then attempt to fix it in WinXP... Another reason I am
trying to fix 98SE is because I'm not sure the version of EZCD I have is XP
compatible so if I want to burn something to CD, not sure I can in XP.

Seems like the key to me, are you sure you have the onboard disabled?

Checked and onboard audio is disabled and was disabled when I first powered
up the system after installing all the new stuff. I will check to see if there is a
jumper on the board as well that can be set to disable onboard audio as well
(a more tangible thing than disabling it in th BIOS).

Actually, MMC 7.5 won't help solve the problem in WinXP since it appears
before MMC is even installed (i.e. at the driver stage). Scrubbing the registry
and reloading with the latest drivers from the ATI site did not solve anything in
Win98SE, so there must be something in my system (re: SBLive card) that is
causing the conflict. Only thing is, if I remove the SBLive Value card in an effort
to eliminate that as a possible source of conflict with the AIW, I won't have any
source for sound...unless I pull the SBLive Value AND enable the onboard sound...
guess I could try that. I might have an old sound card (Ensoniq) or something
lying around I could substitute for the SBLive Value card and work from that angle.
I'd have to make sure all the SBLive drivers are scrubbed from the system though...
not sure how hard that will be to do.

Here I go and upgrade to a really fast platform so I can play with video capture
and all I get is grief.... I had better luck with my P3-700 and AIW 128 Pro than
I am having with my P4-1.8A (@2.4GHz) and AIW Radeon...

removing the sblive, and enabling the onboard audio may help you verify that it is not the card.

Try running at 133Mhz FSB. You are way over that now, my p4s333 sometimes have PCI problems over 133Mhz, especially with sound boards. AGP boards could have trouble too...

Er, uhm, I am running at 133MHz (18x133MHz=2.394GHz)...

I've spent the day cutting up a tree that fell on my house (causing $25K in damage),
so this situation has not been priority #1, but when I get a chance later on this
evening, I will pull the sblive and uninstall its drivers in safe mode and see if I can get
the onboard sound to work for the mean time...

Pulled the SBLive Value card out and enabled the C-Media on-board sound
and the "audio crossbar" thingie will still not load and I still do not have any
sound coming through the line-in when I run the video-in application...

Next....

Could still be some sort of conflict between AIW and the SIS chipset of
the motherboard...but I'm just grasping at straw at this point. Maybe I
should load up some old AIW drivers and see if I can get them to work...

I own an AIW radeon, an ASUS p4s333, & a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I don't seem to be having any problems with WinXP. Before I installed XP I disabled the onboard sound in the bios. Everything seems to be working fine, but I haven't checked the "ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar". I'll do it when I get home from work.

Good grief, thats horrible:Q, I hope everything works out for you.

It seems Shippy has a similar combination working. Also, ATI has new "official" drivers and a seperate WDM driver install available now, maybe some help there?
