Hey, to start off, I am not the most savvy when it comes to setting up networks so.

The problem is, after I hook everything up I can't connect to the internet. Even the computer hardlined into the router I cannot connect with. I've tried powercycling the cable modem, router and nothing. The PC in the other room shows it is connected to the access point but cannot connect to the internet. I reset the router settings to default as well. It's a brand new router.

Any help would be appreciated, I don't know what info is needed to troubleshoot but just ask.

You would find that out by going to the status tab in router settings? If so then no, all blank.

Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0

MTU: 1500

You probably have PPPoE or static IP addresses. You need to log into your cable modem (go modem -> PC directly and get into its web interface) and get these settings. It's probably a login and password somewhere...

Ok, just to be safe look again and double check there's no account information in there, or static IP addresses configured.

I would now try resetting the WRT54 to its factory defaults by using the reset switch. Then, power everything off, and start it in this order

1) Modem - once the lights settle down and it's connected, move on
2) Router - same as above
3) Hardwired PC
4) Wireless PC

Now pray and try to get on the web :)

the only info when logging into the modem is LAN, MTA, CABLE, USB MAC address, serial numbers, firmware info etc. No IP address.

Cycled as you said and still no connectivity ; ;

The router sees the other PC on the network and this one, just can't get onto the internet. Shouldn't it automatically pick up the IP from the cable modem?

This is frustrating me to hell because I know absolutely nothing about networking to schlep me by.

Hmm... Your Modem is Not a Modem/Router combo?

When you log directly to the modem what IP is assigned to the computer?

If it is a modem/Router combo the Linksys should be connected like this.

Update:

I actually neglected to say that I had a Telephone/Cable/Fax Modem. I searched the model number and came up with a problem it had. It seems when you powercycle it, there is a battery inside that prevents it from resetting. So, I didn't think to hit the reset switch on the back until I read that. It rebooted and got the settings and works like a charm.

Sorry for being vague and wasting your time. Thank you for your help guys.

Don't worry you fall in to the same category as 90% of End-Users that seek Network help over the Internet. ;)

Glad you solved the problem.
