Trouble Connecting with Cabled Connection

I recently formatted my mom's hard drive, and upgraded it to Windows ME (it had Windows 98 SE). Her computer connects to the internet from a router with a cable. My brother's machine has Windows XP Pro, and it knows it is sharing the connection. My mom's computer can find it's network adapter, and knows it is sharing the connection. However, any attempts to connect to the internet fail every time.

Internet Explorer will say is it detecting proxy, and will not connect. IE is NOT set up to use a proxy, so I can't figure out why it is trying to use one.

What the *bleep* am I doing wrong?

It's a cable internet connection (Charter).

Not to sound ignorant, but "MAC Cloned"?

It is very common to many Cable ISPs to use the MAC address of your main computer as a form of password. Under such condition it is important that a specific MAC number that is registered by the Cable ISP will be presented by the Router.

Cable/DSL Router has an entry in the Cable section of the menu that allows them to change the MAC. Consult your Router manual and enter the MAC of the computer that can connect via the modem to the Internet into the Router.

I had a problem connecting with WinME and Win2k(sharing dial-up). It worked sometimes and not others. I had to reboot the computers in the proper order.

While looking for a solution I found this site.
It took 2hrs. to dig out and strip an old computer (Cyrix 266:eek:) and get the software installed and running. I had never used Linux for anything before or it might have been quicker.:) TOTAL COST $00.00

Been running like a champ for 9 days:D. No monitor, keyboard,or mouse.

This may not be a solution for your situation. But, you might want to look at it for future use.

My Windows Internet Connection Sharing sure got better when I started Linux to do it.:Q
