Trouble changing Resolution and Refresh Rate in Linux

I was trying to set my Buffalo Linux Desktop to 1024x768@85 and somehow screwed up. All I get now is a
matrix type pattern. I know it has something to do with the /etc/XII directory. Which file and how to fix I don't have a clue. Any help appreciated.

I tried changing the vert and horz sync values. Probably to one which was out of range for my Monitor
Studioworks 995E.

Generally you shouldn't need them, newer versions of X do a decent job at selecting the best refresh for a resolution from the DDC information the monitor provides. But if you want, you can override them in the Monitor section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

If you're using XFree86 then the file you want will either be XF86Config or XF86Config-4. This depends on your distro of choice. If you're using X.org then you'll want x.org.conf. All these files would be located in the /etc/X11/ directory.

Buffalo uses x.org.conf. I was able to change it and get it running from a Admin option on the Logon
Menu. Also, both color depth and resolution were available to change via the pg up and dn and arrow buttons which I hadnt notice previously.
