5% of the workforce is getting axed.

"The announcement comes after AMD Chief Executive Hector Ruiz described AMD's recent performance as "unacceptable." Ruiz said that as many as 800 jobs, the equivalent of 5% of AMD's workforce, would face possible elimination.

"There is no way to sugarcoat our performance in the first quarter," after the company posted a $611 million loss, said Ruiz."

You sir are what we call an idiot.

With two marketing groups, two sales groups did you honestly think that they would keep them?

Intel axed much more then what AMD just did.

Where'd you read that? 2.6% is what I read.

AMD just bought ATI. You *know* there's lots of duplicate positions -- HR, administrative, middle management.

If it's the right 400 people being let go this is great news. It's not necessarily the start of an implosion spiral.

I've been at companies post-merger, and there's absolutely plenty of fat to cut in those situations. I've also been in situations where to make short term look better customer support, QA and & engineering was the source of bloodletting. The first improved morale and efficiency, the second was the beginning of the end.

Yeah, this is the beginning of the shitstorm.

AMD executives are going to continue to takeover ATI operations as if they have the first clue of what it takes to make and compete with GPU's. They need to focus on CPU's and get their ass out of the fire, and let the GPU pro's continue with what they know best. But like all corporations politics and power struggles will emerge and it won't be beneficial. This R600 launch and next generation card will be from the impact of restructuring. Sit back and watch the car wreck happen.

We need AMD to continue to grow, they cannot survive much more of this trend 1/3 of their savings is gone in 1 quarter. The last thing they needed to do was take on more with ATI, when they can't get their own house in order and compete with Intel.
It's not something to take lightly.

Your opinion is duly noted. Now grow a set of manners.

he's right though. just because something happens at a company doesn't mean it has bearing on a product that's already through development and in production. how silly.

"Trouble at AMD" sounds like it could be the title of an adventure book for kids to read.
