trouble adding a second sata hard drive

i tried adding a new toshiba hard drive to my dell desktop. at first it recognized the drive but only device manager and disk management. i tried to initialize it in the disk manager but recieved an error message and now it wont show up anywhere on my computer. ive tried switching ports and power cables but it still wont show up.

please help

Just to confirm the drive will not show up in disk management. If so it sounds like the disk is either broken or the sata power or data cable is defective.

I'd suggest - At startup, hit whatever key is needed to enter the BIOS. Poke around in there (don't make changes or save anything, just have a look) and see if it shows up. What you do next may depend on that.

It sounds like you almost certainly have a failed drive. If it was an issue related to advanced format, it still should show up in the BIOS.

Drive failures aren't that uncommon, even with brand new drives. Getting them shipped to you from some certain online sources (Newegg is one that immediately pops to mind) doesn't help with this.
