like most have said, the first couple of weeks, you may lose fish as the water goes through it's cycles of nitrate/nitrite/ammonia, can't remember exactly as it's been a few years since I put the aquarium away.
I have tried lots of different types of fishies, I liked the cichlids, but you have to do some study to figure out which ones are compatible with each other. I went with the ones from Tanganyika(sp?), there are some orange striped one and blue striped ones that I really liked. Somewhere I have a book on them stored away.
The easiest setup to maintain, though, after the water was balanced, was assorted Tetras, with a plecostomas, and either a Rainbow Shark, or Albino Shark.
Snails can take over, so I avoid them.
Are you using jets on your filtering system?
