And for me, it's not so much the abuse of power (which is bad enough in itself). It's this sense of pettiness and small-mindedness. She and Todd just couldn't let go of the fact that Wooten's disciplinary penalty didn't make him suffer enough.

And then you look at the stuff they tried to "gotcha" him on. The moose killing thing is truly an indication of just how feeble their minds are. Wooten and his wife were on a moose hunt. Wooten's wife [Sara's sister], who was the permit-holder, wouldn't shoot the moose herself, so she gave her rifle to Wooten who shot the animal, clearly with her approval. They then took the carcass to her father, who butchered the animal. The ENTIRE group was party to the incident. If there was illegality - they were ALL culpable. Here's the relevant portion of the report (starting on page 23 - highlighting is mine):

Mr. Monegan: Pertaining to the moose, I said that in the moose kill, for example, if you wanted criminal charges brought against Wooten for actually pulling the trigger on a technicality, his wife did have the permit, and she was with him.

If she was standing with him and he's the only one that just pulled the trigger, did that violate the letter of the law? Probably. Did it violate the spirit of the law? I don't think anybody's going to charge it. But if they did, if there was a criminal act there, there would be more people who would be culpable of being charged than just Wooten.

Mr. Branchflower: How so?

Mr. Monegan: Well, the wife, it was her permit. She willingly allowed somebody else to use it.

It also -- once the moose had been shot, it had been drug, according to Todd, by Wooten in the back -- from the back of the truck to the location where it was butchered by the governor's father. And so I was pointing out that there are people also involved in this incident that theoretically could also be charged.

And he said, I didn't want that. I only want Wooten charged. Well, we're not that way. If there's somebody who's guilty, we have to hold everybody accountable for their actions and their decisions.

That Sara Palin could so easily overlook the culpability of her sister and father is this incident because she wanted to "get" Wooten, well to me it just says volumes about her integrity, her incredible stupidity, her hollowness as a human being.

3) At its heart, this "scandal" has about as much substance as the infamous travelgate-but that led directly to Bill Clinton's impeachment, so who knows how far this will go.

No. At it's heart, this scandal (with NO quotation marks), is about Palin's abuse of the power of her office to impliment a vendetta against her ex brother-in-law, Michael Wooten, and to damage both the financial security and the reputation of a qualified state employee Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan when he wouldn't fire Wooten.

Her position gave her the authority to fire Monegan. It did NOT give her the right to abuse that authority, which is what the bipartisan commission says she did.

4) Possible consequence-if this really, really gains traction Palin could withdraw for good of party, Romney steps in. Instant business credibility for McCain, shot at Michigan and the type of hail mary crap shoot that McCain loves to do. Highly unlikely, but a possibility, especially in this wild race.

McCain won't get any business or any other credibility out of this. He shot himself and any remaining credibility he had in both legs when he chose Palin knowing she was under investigation for these charges. At a minimum, he and his campaign failed to vet her and her story, and they're on record as working furiously to suppress and quash the investigation, at least until after the election. Forturnately, they failed!

McCain couldn't keep his Double Talk Express on track if it had training wheels. :|

5) I'm delighting in tuning into Fox News to see how they spin this, it's great. They mention the negative findings briefly in passing (if that), point out as the report's main conclusion that Palin acted within her scope of authority, and that the liberal media is trying to twist her husband's noble actions to protect the family as something wrong.

And, as usual, Murdoch's droids don't care about facts or reason. With Rupert's millions, they can buy an infinte supply of hot air to support their spin.

Seems like "Hockey Mom" has the typical loose family morals and lack of ethics that make up a good Republican. "Do as I say, not as I do."

ROFL...I dunno...in one way, it'd be smart of him to do so, but in another way...if Mommie Dearest is gonna be in big-time politics...it could mean big things for him. Nepotism FTW!

Actually, I was noticing that it seems the American people are all too happy to jump on a bandwagon for a fresh face.

Had Palin been named 3 days before the election, she might have been a big help to McCain - there was a sort of euphoric reaction.

The common wisdom is that you can't change the name late in the game, and it's usually right I suspect, but I wonder, if McCain were to make a change shortly before the election (if he can), say appoint Newt Gingrich or some right-wing darlin media figure, if it might not be a big boost for him, as people seem willing to support a new name more than I had noticed before without the inconvenient 'vetting period'.

The US is often criticized for a long campaign cycle (some say it's 4 years long every 4 years), but I see some benefit to avoiding rash decisions based on media-manufactured 'image'. People's opinions shift; it took a while for Barack to get better known while earlier he was seen as some new kid 'lightweight' (and still is by many on the right, but they're not the point).

In other words, those who would oppose a late in the game change may tend to already oppose McCain, while a 'good' pick by him late in the game might get a big 'bounce'.

I suspect though that 'moderate' voters would not react too well, so it'd be more useful for his base, if it were larger, and after Bush it's not.

Fixed.

To put it in terms rabid Republicans might understand, imagine if Obama became president. Now imagine if his baby mama started sitting in the Oval Office and making calls to get Shaniqua's man fired from his job emptying the trash at the Pentagon? And if Barack were totally down with it and even started having cabinet meetings with the Secretary of Defense to imply this firing needed to be done? And if Michelle were sitting in on those and other cabinet meetings?

The problem comes from Palin allowing her husband to exercise undue influence from the Governor's office and not stopping it from happening. I wouldn't be surprised if after failing to win the VP seat, Palin returns to Alaska and finds the Republican legislature there has reverted to its normal state of unfriendliness. I can even see them voting to censure the Governor in some way, either for her actions that this probe addressed or for telling people to ignore subpoenas.
Or that John McCain can understand ("You probably never heard of Fannie or Freddie until a couple of weeks ago").

Looks like the Pitbull is well on her way to a one-way bridge to nowhere.

WTF does that song have to do with this topic? Hey Harvey, is this another one of your songs that you are pimping?

You're having trouble following that?

Here. I'll spell it out for you:
  • It was a direct response to his post.
  • The setup line was, "If you don't stop it, you'll go blind."
  • "The title of the song is, "Can I Do It Til I Need Glasses?"
  • The implication was that he was, in fact, willfully blind to the significance of the committee report.
As long as I've known you, I never known you to need a paint by numbers forum posting kit.

Well, its going to be interesting to see how Palin spins this long term. The report, could not have been more critical of Palin's lack of ethics.

But I somehow suspect that Palin will make the usual set of excuses that fly with only the GOP hardcore, as independents will have even more reasons to doubt Palin.

As I suspect the Palin camp will long term try the Katrina strategy, ignore troopergate and hope it goes away.

I dunno that the Alaska politicians, R or D, will go to that extremes. Peoples memory is short. Look how quickly we've forgotten the Bush admin lies on Iraq.

She will go back and spin the investigation, run some populist scheme and keep here rating in Alaska.

I just hope any aspirations she had for a national presence are toast.

When will the circus that is Palin end? Nov 4th can't get here soon enough to get this corrupt dipstick off the front page of media outlets. It's getting to the point where she could have been selling PCP to Ayers and laundering the money to her campaign and I wouldn't be surprised. She is a hidden political cancer parading around as a canker sore covered with makeup.

Read back a few dude, Barack on his own, no way...but since the Dems have a pretty good position in both the house and the senate then sure...raising taxes and universal health care have been on the liberal/democratic agenda for a long long time so yes I do think both of those things would happen, maybe not soon but eventually...heck it happened in MA because of the pressure the Repub Gov was under at the time.
