Hello,
My computer was/has been infested by some trojan.

It disabled my task manager and registry editor manager.

i used the following method to get back access
Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)
REG add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System /v DisableCMD /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

i did a scan using avg and it did not turn up any virus or trojan.

do you guys know what virus/trojan could be lurking in my machine.

is avg not upto the mark in scanning for virus/trojans?

To rookie1010 who asks---is avg not upto the mark in scanning for virus/trojans?

The answer to that question is that AVG is not the absolute best in terms of detection rates, its not even second or third best, but in the grand scheme of things its one of the better AV programs. Maybe not an A+ program but a solid B or B+.

But the giant implied myth is that pre and post infection detection are one and the same thing.

The point being, I bough a used computer at a very attractive price. The seller even included 4000+ pieces of malware at no extra charge. Most of those 4000 yielded easily to various freeware. But long after he best on line scanner in Kaspersky said it was all clean, I was still finding malware that Kaspersky would have stopped as a pre infection. Once it installs and infects, its far harder to find and remove. Prevention is the key after you get your computer cleaned.

thanks for the replies,

makes sense,

prevention is better than cure.

i am contemplating going linux this year. perhaps that will give me a better level of protection.

Superantispyware free is an excellent compliment to AVG. It scans on demand for adware spyware and trojans and repairs them. The pay version has real time protection, but I've never used that.

It and AVG are very effective when run in safe mode. No one program will protect from everything, so I try to layer my protection with efficient programs that can play nice together.

One great prevention tool is Spywareblaster. It blocks known bad downloads and websites while using no resources.
