Trojan backdoor progdav

I checked my parents PC with Spysweeper and it found "trojan backdoor progdav". It seems to come back every time I try to get rid of it. When I scan in safe mode spysweeper doesn't find it, and neither did housecall. I scanned in normal mode with housecall and it doesn't find it. Is spysweeper giving a false positive? No other scans pick this up.

Disable Windows Defender's active protection because it interferes with HijackThis' fixes.
* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save

When you're finished with the steps below, make sure you re-enable it again.

? Open HijackThis, click Open the Misc Toos section, then click Delete a file on bootup
- a window will open
- Where it says "File Name" - copy and paste: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe
- Click Open
- A prompt will appear advising you that the file will be deleted and asking if you want to reboot now
- Click Yes
- Your computer will now reboot.

After reboot, you may get an error - don't worry about it.

Run HijackThis, click System Scan Only and checkmark:
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,

Close ALL open browsers, programs except for HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Now, make sure you have your system set to view hidden folders/files.

Boot into Safe Mode.

Check and see if you have this folder:
C:\Windows\system32\wsnpoem
If you do, there will be two files in the folder:
video.dll
audio.dll
Delete both files.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Now, update AVG annd Spysweeper and scan your system. Run HijackThis to make sure that the F2 entry is gone.

2d Reminder: Re-enable Windows Defender.

You should be good to go.

Thanks Medea, that worked. I had suspected the same line in the HJT log, but couldn't get rid of it. Disabling defender solved that, and I didn't see that folder.

Sometimes that folder comes with an ntos.exe infection; sometimes it doesn't. Even better that it wasn't present on your system because that means the infection hadn't really taken hold. :thumbsup:
