We have always played that the players choose the category before looking at the card.

The rules say:
"When you do hit the hub, the other players select the category of the game-winning question from the next card in the appropriate box."

The rules don't say:
"When you do hit the hub, the other players select the game-winning question from the next card in the appropriate box."
 
We use our own rules. To guard against super-easy, 50-50 Q's like True/False or impossible questions a player landing in the middle gets an entire card and must answer 4 of 6 correct to win. Makes it a lot more fair, you need to win on overall knowledge, not a fluke.

But before switching to that rule we always played that the other needed to choose the cat BEFORE looking at the card.
