No googling. This is on the honor system.

ALERT: VOTE BEFORE YOU READ THE THREAD CONTENTS BECAUSE REALIBRAD WENT AND POSTED THE DOGGONE SOURCE (that is if you want to be honest).

Yes, I know atheists will object to their inclusion as a religious group. But hate crimes are perpetrated against them, so I think they're relevantly added here.

Are you talking about most frequent as an absolute number, or most frequent as per 100,000? It would only make sense if you did it in terms of hate crime/100,000, because otherwise Protestants will almost certainly win out just because there are so many more of them than any other group. It would also be useful to judge it based on hate crimes that were as a result of their religion, as I imagine a large proportion of hate crimes towards Protestants would be racial hate crimes against black people.

My guess would be that Protestants 'win' in absolute numbers, and Muslims 'win' in crimes per 100k, although I wouldn't be that surprised if Jews were up there too.

My guess is that he is talking about this.

If so I win.

I initially thought Christians. But since you segregated denominations and didn't include Baptists...I'll choose Jews instead.

I believe the Native American population has suffered the most hate crimes (near genocide), next, African Americans, and then we can wring our hands over the religious hate crimes.

Right now or in the past.

Now = Muslims

In the past it's been all the others, depending on the year gap.

You would be wrong. I'm sure it feels that way to you right now because of what is going on in the media, but the reality is that there are other groups out there that are targeted more.

Let's say in general since 2010.

Let's say absolute numbers. Of a given number of hate crimes in a single time period, which group had the highest rate of victimization?

Well based on this FBI link someone posted I see Jewish seems to top the list (assuming I'm reading correctly)? Interesting, never thought Jews are targeted often. Yep I'm wrong....

Absolute numbers isn't very informative. If someone murdered literally every single Muslim in the US and only killed about 3% of Protestants, Protestants would be victimized more often than Muslims in the US. That doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyway, as per realibrad's link, the answer appears to be Jewish people.

This answers it. From the FBI site....

Religious bias
Of the 1,340 victims of an anti-religious hate crime:

62.4 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
11.6 percent were victims of an anti-Islamic bias.
7.5 percent were victims of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).
6.4 percent were victims of an anti-Catholic bias.
2.6 percent were victims of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.9 percent were victims of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
8.6 percent were victims of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion). (Based on Table 1.)

No matter where you go, Jews are always hated it seems. That is a different thread though. There is a lot of talk about Islam right now, so its easy to assume that they are being targeted far more often. If things continue in the way they are going it may change.

Also keep in mind, there are actually very few hate crimes in the US.

I never would've guessed it either, in fairness. My initial guess would've been muslims.

2014 it did go up a few points.

6.2 percent were victims of bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).
6.1 percent were victims of anti-Catholic bias.

And at least by the FBIs numbers since 2006, they've been steadily decreasing

2006 - 9,652
2007 - 9,535
2008 - 9,691 (uptick)
2009 - 8,336
2010 - 8,208
2011 - 7,713
2012 - 7,164
2013 - 7,242 (uptick)
2014 - 6,727

True, but I still can't get over the Jewish rate. More than all other groups combined and then some.

Even after all that has happened, Jews still take the brunt of hate crimes in terms of religion. Jews make up just a little more than Muslims in this country so its a very big difference. There might be some factors on this, but still very drastic difference. Blaming the death of Jesus is probably part of it, which seems really stupid.

My GFs dad is a jack bag. He wont let his 12 yo daughter go to the Holocaust museum for a school field trip. So far as I know, he is not a denier, but he just dislikes the Jews enough to not want her to feel sorry for anything that has happened. He is a Boston catholic, but no forgiveness there.

Baptists will bristle at this, but I bet the FBI includes them under the Protestant denomination.

In general, all Christians that are not Catholics might be said to be under the Protestant umbrella.

Recommend a movie to him: The Scarlet and the Black. Gregory Peck, Christopher Plummer, John Gieldgud. About when Rome was under Nazi occupation. True story about a Monsignor who harbors/helps people the nazis are looking for (Jews included). Excellent movie. Might open his mind a bit.

His hate for Jews is irrational, so I dont hold out much hope for anything getting through. They "killed" Jesus. The irony is that he is Italian so really the people that killed Jesus is his background. Plus, Jesus had to die as it was His/Gods plant, but meh.

Going to guess Protestant due to their outsize representation in the U.S. and that the primary "hate crime" committed against them is anti-gay bias. That's presuming that gay's religious self-identification follows the national distribution pattern, which it may not.

Also I guess depending how you define terms Jews could be up there because they seem to suffer a lot of indirect hate crimes like swastikas painted on temples and whatnot.
